195.8: Balancing Back to Normal

Last Wednesday (8/7) was 4 weeks since surgery.  Last Monday (8/5), my supervisor called asking when I thought I'd be back.  I had to take a pause.  My doctor's note indicates 6-8 weeks with an additional 2 weeks of part time before I transition back to full time.

I told him that I honestly didn't know.  There are hours where I think, hey I could do that computer stuff and work.  And there are several days like this previous weekend, when I'm not sleeping and in pain and trying to sleep every few hours.  I have no idea where I'll be in 4 weeks.  I may need some additional time or additional part time to be able to return.

On Friday Pete and I went to my Grandma's house, a place of comfort and caring, so he could help her with a new computer.  In the 4 hours that we were there, I fell asleep twice for about 30 minutes each.  When we got home at 3pm, I fell asleep almost instantly and slept hard for 3 hours.  Clearly, I'm currently in no shape for lengthy trips out of the house.

The fallout of course, is that my need for sleep to recover is really screwing with my insomnia that I normally suffer with.  So I slept on Friday afternoon because my body obviously needed it.  In return I slept 11 hours over the weekend with no naps.  My insomnia flared and I ended up having to take Ambien last night to get a full night's sleep.

So I need to rethink this plan of mine for recovery.  I need to start shooting for balancing my recovery needs with my usual needs and strive for "normal" again.  I'm finding it's not so easy.

190.4; Friday Fives

1.  Thank goodness for Fridays.  Honestly.  I don't know how I'd get through the week without them.  Well actually it's Saturday that I look forward to.  Friday is the just the lead in.  And even though Sunday is the weekend, it signals going back to work, so that doesn't count.  Yep.  Saturdays are it.

2.  My 10 year old niece sent me this text:
Is she really just 10?  Because who references going on a cruise and needing to play with a dog prior to that?  Earlier she told me she was "confussed" which is really confused.  But Pete said this only confirmed that she was my relative, given all my misspelled words in my texts to him.

3.  I'm a winner in my work's Passport to Health program for 2012.  I completed 11 of 13 items and was in a random drawing.  My prize?  2 tickets to a movie.  Hello Popcorn with butter and salt!  (listen, I know it's not the right thing, but it tastes so freaking good!  and I only get a kid's sized.)

4.  As you can see from up there, I'm borrowing my 10 yr old niece and 7 yr old nephew this weekend.  We're either going toThe Rollerdome to go rollerblading or to Mall of America Ice Castle.  By Sunday I should be well worn out and have little to no patience left.  Just in time to take the kiddos back.  HA!

5.  Sunday starts the Mpls St. Paul Restaurant Week.  YUM!  Pete and I split the $30 meal because neither of us can eat a whole one any more.  So how can you beat a $30 +great tip meal from restaurants that usually mean $100-$200?  We have reservations at Murrays, Copper River Fish & Chop House and The Capital Grille.  When we go to Murrays we're taking my 88 year old grandma with us.  Pete calls it a date.  And I love him for that.

2012 Word

I talked a while ago about how people chose words to use as their theme for the year.  Cheesy, yes.  But sometimes I think that we need a little cheese to get us through.

2011 wasn't easy.

There were family stresses that seem to have settled back out.  Although they're always there, lingering, ready to resurface.  My Grandma seems to be better from her back injury and has regained enough strength to live daily again.  She was fabulous on Christmas.  I spent a realtivly relaxed Christmas with family and it was a good one.  Whether it's the idea that she may not be around all that much longer and we need to enjoy it or that we were all simply getting along, it was a good one and I'll take it.

There was financial stress.  Pete was on unemployment more than he worked.  It's frustrating as hell to see how he struggled to find a job that was a good fit for him and the employer.  He started working for a new company, permanent and full time the week of 12/12/11.  The steady check that is much more than what he was getting on unemployment is certainly welcomed.  We have a good plan to get caught up on our emergecy fund, our travel fund and savings again.

There was physical stress.  I struggled all year with losing additional weight.  I'd be active 6 days a week at the gym, watching portions and what I ate and still see no results.  Many times I felt like giving up.  And to some degree I did that after I hurt the balls of my feet in August.  But I'm back at it.  Working out 4-5 days a week and doing what I can to help myself out.  I struggled through getting approved for a gastric banding surgery and I'm still in the process.  But I see a window of light and I'm reaching for it with all I have.

There was emotional stress.  All that suff that I just wrote...it causes emotional stress in various ways.  A blue day here and there.  Frustration, anger, irritation....  Pete and I are in for the long haul marriage wise.  We both understand there are ups and downs along the way and quitting just isn't an option.  It's not that we have problems, it's that we are finding our way.  We're understanding that it takes work and just doesn't happen.

So for 2012, my word is CHOICES.

I see how choices that I made in 2011 determined my path all along.  Even when I didn't make the better choice, I rode it out and figured out how to get back to center with new choices.  Choices are made with lots of thought and with little thought.  I'd like 2012 to be the year that I really consider my choices and be aware of why I made that choice.  I'd like to think that I continue to learn from wrong choices and when the situation presents it's self again, I can chose to make the better choice the next time.

CHOICES.

Celebrating Halloween

Weird huh?  I mean who celebrates Halloween?  Indulge me....

As a kid and even now as an adult, Halloween has always been special to me.  As a kid I'd come home from school and hurry up with any homework.  I'd don my homemade costume of a pioneer girl, Raggedy Ann, a M&M or whatever my Mom sewed for me.  We'd get into the car and drive a few miles to my Grandparent's house in town.  Not that we lived out of town, but they lived in a proper city with blocks close together and lots of neighbors.

We'd arrive and as soon as we got out of the car my Grandma would fly out of the front door and tell us to pose for a picture.  When that was done we'd run inside to the smell of tacos.  When I was an adult I learned just how much taco meat my Grandma made; 10-15 pounds!  As a kid all I knew was that the smell of taco meat was enticing.  We didn't get tacos at home much because my Dad didn't like them.  It was also special because we got to make them ourselves with things like black olives, lots of cheese and crushed up Doritos for the shells.  We'd each make our dinner and head to the table to eat.

Inevitably, while eating, the doorbell would start to ring, signalling the start of Trick of Treating.  We'd glance at all the costumes and eat quicker, knowing it was our turn next.  After saying hello to some of the neighbors that had dropped by to both see us and been seen with their grandkids, we'd head off to collect our share of candy.  Up one side of the street, down the other, over to the next block and do it again.  The pattern stayed the same every year.  And every year you could count the houses that would have "good" candy and "bad candy.

We'd return home with heavy plastic pumpkins or bulging plastic treat bags that snapped at the top.  The adults would ask if we had fun and which were the best costumes.  We'd yell as we ran through the house to the TV room in the back.  There we'd dump out the candy and finger it all.  Then we'd start picking out the best ones and the ones that we'd trade away for what we wanted.  Sated with candy, we'd sit back and watch the Peanuts Halloween or Charlie Brown Halloween cartoon.  Soon it would be time to go home and sleep.

As an adult I still love this day.  But for different reasons.  I love going to my Grandma's house early to help her set up the taco bar.  We sit and talk about life while chopping tomatoes and onions.  Once done we sit at the kitchen table, looking out the front window and waiting.  We wait for kids to come in cute costumes.  We wait for neighbors to come and catch up.  We wait for family to arrive with kids all excited.  About 15 years ago my Grandma was known for taking pictures of kids in cute costumes.  More recently she stopped because she was concerned that parents would be fearful of where to pictures went.

All night long we adults would sit, stand and hand out.  Kids would ring the doorbell and we'd take turns answering the door with the massive amount of candy that my Grandma buys.  Giving out one item and watching as Grandma opened the door and couldn't help but give out 2 or 3 when it was her turn.

My Grandma is 86, about to be 87 in January.  She's had some health scares in the last 18 months.  She had a stroke last year.  This year she's spent time in and out of the hospital and in a rehabilitative nursing home.  She's not able to host Halloween this year, even though it breaks her heart to break the tradition.  For me, it's a happy and sad time.  Happy because I still enjoy the Halloween spirit and I have a new puppy to dress up in costume (insert evil giggle).  Sad because this is the first year that I can remember not being at my Grandma's house the whole night.  My sister has decided to continue the tradition at her house, but it's not the same.  I'm planning on visiting my Grandma with the puppy in costume.  But it's just not the same.

So as many say in various times, hug your Family members and enjoy them in the here and now for you never know when it changes.  Happy Halloween to you and yours!

Pulled back in

I tried so hard the last couple of years to be me. To do what makes me happy. I thought I had found a balance between family and me. Although my Mom would make comments about me not attending things, I let them roll off my back and went on about my business.

I feel like I'm getting pulled in again. My Mom wants everyone to make more of an effort to go over to see my Grandma more often. To check up on her and spend time with her. I have no issues doing that. Only I know that other people won't do the same. So I'm at that point where I feel like the weight of it all is on me. I need to remember that I do my part and not worry about others. I need to rememeber this. I need to remember to not lose myself in this also.

Just now, I realized that it also worries me about caring for Mom and Dad should the need arise. Will the weight of the care fall onto me?

I need to keep myself in all this. Remember my resolve to make me happy.

Family Ties

I was just out of college and job seeking. It was difficult. I completed an internship over the summer and was talking with my internship supervisor about how to job seek and what tools I needed. He told me that I should immediately move away from the area and my family. That I needed independence that I wasn't getting by returning to the area that I grew up in.

Thankfully I did not take his advice. I realize that sometimes family can be a detriment to people. I realize that independence is a skill that everyone needs. However, those things don't have to come at the expense of a family who cares about you.

I am tied to my family. For better or worse as they say. Though they may irriate me, hurt me, insult me, they also love me, support me and are my family. I cannot turn my back on them. I will not turn my back on them.

I love them. Deeply. For the things that they have sacrificed for me. For the things that they have done because of me. For the love they showed me. For the encouragment they gave me. For being my family.

My last grandparent is in the hosptial as we speak. Honestly I'm barely holding it together. Of all my grandparents, I am most close to her. I lived with her for three years. I love her. I don't know what I'd do without her. I need prayers for her. For my Mom and my Aunt. For me. I need prayers for me.

Questions of Faith

Pete and I went to see Angels and Demons last night. I cried.

I was so 'in' the movie that I never noticed time passing in reality. It's not often that happens for me. But for this one it did. I learned about my faith. I learned some interesting things that I should have learned long ago. And maybe I did, but just forgot. I learned more about why people dislike Catholics. I'll never ever understand the hate, but the dislike of the basis of the religion I can somewhat understand.

One of the characters is speaking to the College of Cardinals about joining faith & science. He says something to the effort of the Catholic Church is not asking time to stand still, it's asking science to stop, take a breath and consider the ramifications of what they are doing. That speech resonated in me. It bounced around my head and I could at once understand it.

At the end I cried. Not because of the outcome of the movie. The end so reminds me of my Grandma Laura. I tried to explain to Pete about how envious I was of that absolute faith in the Church and in God. The faith that He will provide or the Church will provide. The faith that He or the Church will make everything right as it should be. The faith that everything is within Him and the Church. Pete pointed out that you don't need to go to church every day to be faithful. And I believe that. But I think at my core I wish for a simpler existence. One where worries and troubles and prayers are given to God and never thought about again. I don't think it's within me to do that, but I wish for it.

Then it made me wonder if I was on my our journey of faith. If my bracelet was telling me to embrace the questions that I have about faith and learn more about the Church? I find so much comfort in the tradition of the Church. However, I can't reconcile the teachings of the Church from thousands of years ago with the present day's findings and accomplishments. Therein lies the heart of the issue with me and faith.

I've been remiss...

In blogging. I have good intentions, but sometimes I just don't get here to post. I have been updaing the wedding blog a lot.

Last weekend was so much fun. We went to the races Friday! Raceway Park had their Friday Destruction night and it lived up to it's name. There was an awesome flagpole race that I got some cool pictures of. At the end there was a Dukes of Hazzard jump. I think there were about 12 cars/trucks. The last one was a t-top camero or something like that and it went 112 feet. One guy lost his back axel and another lost his front. I'm so happy that it's racing season.

Saturday we were to meet with the pastor, however, he forget and didn't show up. So we went up to the Harley dealer and joined in on the pig roast they were having. Pete talked more to the dealer about his bike and got all excited. Saturday night we took Grandma to the Glockenspeil for dinner. We talked about the wedding and told her some of the details. Then we went to The Anoka River Run and walked around. It was the first night and not many cars, but still cool. I told Pete that I thought it was cool that this was something that the city ok'd. When I was in school the thing to do was cruise the mainstreet. People would come out with families in lawn chairs after dinner & sit along the mainstreet to watch the cars. Only it got to be too much for the downtown and people living nearby complained. This River Run show blocks off several blocks for cars. Only they advertise and get people into the downtown stores and restaurants. We're going to go back again one of the weekends when it's got more cars.

Sunday we got up and ran down to the gun/knife show in Anoka. Nothing was purchased, but it was entertaining. Then we went to meet with the pastor. He was incredibly nice and didnt' charge for the meeting with him, only the compatability test. Pete giggled during the test and we talked about some of the questions afterwards. I can't wait to see where our strengths/weaknesses are as a couple. Then we went to the State Capital Building for the 150 year celebration. Can you believe that I have never been in and toured it? We got some cool pictures and even went out on the top where the golden horses are. Then we ran over to the MN History Center to see a copy of the Declaration of Independence. It was cool!!! Pete thought I was a dork, but in true Pete fashion, he never shows it and always goes along with what I want to do. Great man, isn't he?

5 Things

I see lists all the time in blogs and somewhat see it as an "easy entry". However this list that was posted on a message board took some thought and time to complete. I thought it appropriate for blogging. I really tried to complete it quickly with the first things that come to mind. And it somewhat reminds me of the Bucket List in that it makes you think about what is important to you.

Fascinate me:
1. 1960's era. The politics, the culture, the feeling, the events...
2. The ocean. Powerful, relaxing, beautiful all in one.
3. A child's mind. It's amazing how they think.
4. Pete. The man has lived and travelled in so many places. His youth was so different from mine.
5. Reality shows. Why would people go on them? What things do they do on them that they wouldn't? All of it.

Inspire me
1. My Grandma. The work ethic and ethic in gerneral for life makes me want to reach higher.
2. My niece. Seeing the world through her eyes makes me want to forget the big picture and focus on the little things that make me happy.
3. Food network. LOL I love to cook. And watching it makes me think about quitting this life and becoming a chef.
4. The sun. The brightness, the warmth, the way it colors the world around me makes me inspired to be nicer to nature.
5. Jon Bon Jovi. *giggle* I look at him and how he went from nothing to rock str, philanthapist, businessman, family man, friend. It makes me want to be more like him

Anger me
1. Child abuse.
2. Criminals who continue to revolve in the system.
3. Cancer. I HATE it.
4. People who are inconsiderate drivers. Your stupidity shouldn't put me at risk for a crash...
5. The government. It's a love/hate thing.

Confuse me
1. The buraucracy of government. How did we lose the simple idea of get it done to all that crap in the legislature?
2. Sokodu puzzles.
3. How a computer works (no matter how many times Pete explains all the workings...)
4. How people full of themselves cannot see that they are full of themselves.
5. Making Lebkuchen for Christmas! LOL

Delight me
1. A child's laughter.
2. Seeing Pete's smile at me.
3. Feeling the warm sun on my face.
4. Gooey chocolate cake.
5. A cold diet dr pepper on a hot day.

Amaze me
1. The vastness of the world that I have never seen.
2. That my parents lived through the turbulent 60's. That my Grandparents lived through the Great Depression.
3. That I am an adult.
4. How I can connect with people on the internet that I have never met.
5. True Love.

Sadden me
1. Child abuse.
2. Crime in general. The revolving criminal that is wasting a life.3
. Couples who cannot have children, despite years of trying.
4. The thought that I may not have children of my own.
5. The thought of losing my parents.

Fulfill me
1. My love for Pete.
2. Being creative - cards, scraping, crochet...
3. Reading a good book.
4. Learning something new.
5. Doing a random act of kindness with nothing expected in return.

Frighten me
1. Growing old without having children.
2. Losing my family to death.
3. The what-if's that I regrat doing or not doing.
4. Chemical/nuclear war.
5. Losing control of a vehicle while driving for any reason.

Relax me
1. A bath.
2. Laying in bed next to Pete with my head in his arm.
3. A nice glass of wine and a good meal.
4. A day walking around a museam.
5. The feeling of being loved.

So what are yours?

To Pete...

I've been remiss in blogging the last week. Not because there isn't anything to blog about, but because although I want to get this stuff from my head I don't want it all to be negative.

To Pete,

Gosh I love how you take care of me when I'm sick. I had a stomache thing yesterday. When you woke me up to kiss me goodbye you asked if I was going to work and I told you I wasn't. You replied that you would leave me the laptop and kissed me goodbye. Although I didn't want to take my medicine Monday night for fear it would make my tummy hurt worse, you helped me see that it was the better choice. And you held me tight while I fell asleep.

I love you.

Love Me

On another subject, my Grandma is/was in the hospital. She went in Saturday afternoon with chest pains. My Dad finally left me a message Saturday night at 10:30pm after my sister asked if someone called me. It makes me incredibly sad that my family has come to this. It turns out that Grandma has anexiety. I so torn. I don't want my relationship with her based on lies and secrets. I want to tell her what is going on between my parents and I, but I worry that it will only make her anxiety worse and I also don't want to do that. So I wait. Wait to see how she is and to see where this standoff with my parents will go. Thinking of you Grandma.
